About Saranda Moist Forest
Saranda Reserved Forest is the largest sal forest in Asia, covering over 820 square kilometres of the Singhbhum district in a magnificent, cathedral-like landscape of towering sal trees whose canopies interlock 30 metres overhead. Saranda means 'seven hundred hills' in the Santhali language of the indigenous Ho tribal people who have lived in this forest for millennia. Herds of elephants move freely through Saranda's valleys, and the forest is also significant for its iron ore deposits — a source of long-standing conflict between mining and conservation.
