About Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary
Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary is India's only gibbon sanctuary, set in a fragment of semi-evergreen forest named after the Hollong tree (Dipterocarpus macrocarpus) surrounded entirely by tea estates in Jorhat district. Despite its tiny size of just 20 square kilometres, the sanctuary is home to a remarkable concentration of primates — seven species, including India's only ape, the Hoolock gibbon — making it one of the most primate-rich areas on earth per unit area. The gibbons' morning calls, beginning before dawn, are among the most atmospheric sounds in the Indian jungle.
