About the Leopard Cat
The leopard cat is India's most widespread and common small wild cat — a house-cat-sized felid with beautiful leopard-like spots that inhabits forests across the entire Indian subcontinent from the Himalayas to the southern tip of the Western Ghats. Despite being common, it is rarely seen due to its strictly nocturnal habits and secretive nature.
Leopard cats occupy an enormous range of habitats from tropical rainforests to temperate mountain forests, scrubland, and even agricultural land. They are highly adaptable predators, preying on rodents, birds, lizards, and insects. The leopard cat achieves a distinction unique among wild animals — it is the wild ancestor of the Bengal domestic cat breed, created in the 1960s by crossing leopard cats with domestic cats. This hybrid breed is now one of the world's most popular pet cats while the wild ancestor struggles with habitat loss.
