About Wei Sawdong Falls

Wei Sawdong Falls is one of Meghalaya's most beautiful hidden treasures — a three-tiered cascade descending through a limestone gorge near Cherrapunji into a sequence of emerald natural pools that are famous for their extraordinary colour, caused by the mineral content of the water leaching through the surrounding limestone plateau. The falls are reached by a short trek through the Cherrapunji forest that passes through living root bridge territory, creating a forest walk of remarkable ecological and cultural richness.

The three pools below Wei Sawdong's tiers are among the most photogenic natural swimming spots in northeast India, with different shades of turquoise and green depending on the season and light conditions. The surrounding Khasi forest is ancient and largely undisturbed, with the undergrowth full of the endemic plants and fungi that make the Cherrapunji plateau one of the most important botanical sites in northeast India. The Khasi communities around Wei Sawdong have maintained their traditional stewardship of this forest with remarkable consistency.

October–December when rains reduce, the pools are clearest, and forest light improves.

💡 Pro tip

Polarising filter is essential for the pool shots — without it the reflections obscure the extraordinary underwater colours.
