About Joranda Falls

Joranda Falls at 181 metres is the second major waterfall inside Simlipal National Park, and though less famous than its giant neighbour Barehipani, it offers arguably the most dramatic viewing experience — the falls can be approached to within a hundred metres and the scale and power of the drop is experienced at close range. The amphitheatre of forest that surrounds the base of Joranda creates an enclosed, cathedral-like space that amplifies the sound of the cascade to an almost overwhelming level.

The trek from the forest road to Joranda passes through magnificent mature sal forest where elephants frequently browse and the ground is rich with bird activity. Both Joranda and Barehipani are best visited as a combined day trip from Baripada, with the journey through Simlipal's forest as much a highlight as the waterfalls themselves. The park's forest is also rich in orchids, tree ferns, and the spectacular Simlipal silk cotton trees that bloom scarlet in February, giving the entire forest a distinctive character.

October–January; morning light falls into the Joranda gorge from the east.

💡 Pro tip

The close approach to Joranda allows handheld shots without a tripod even at slow shutter speeds — the enclosed gorge blocks wind that would cause camera shake.
