About Aharbal Falls
Aharbal Falls in the Shopian district of Jammu & Kashmir is one of the Kashmir Valley's most enchanting natural landscapes, earning the name "Niagara of Kashmir" for its wide, powerful cascade. The Vishav River drops dramatically across a 25-metre arc in a horseshoe curtain of white water framed by dense Himalayan pine and walnut forest. The surrounding meadows, carpeted with wildflowers in summer, complete a scene of extraordinary Kashmiri beauty.
The falls are most dramatic in late spring and early summer when snowmelt from the upper Pir Panjal range swells the Vishav River. A wooden bridge above the falls offers an unusual perspective looking directly down into the churning pool below, while the forest trail alongside the river is one of the finest short walks in the Kashmir Valley. The surrounding Aharbal forest has been a royal hunting reserve since the Mughal era and still harbours brown bears, leopards, and a rich community of Himalayan birds.
Morning light from the eastern bank; polarising filter removes spray glare. Best June–August.
