About the Mugger Crocodile
The mugger crocodile is India's most widespread crocodilian — a broad-snouted, powerfully built reptile found in rivers, lakes, marshes, and reservoirs across the subcontinent. Unlike the specialist gharial, the mugger is a generalist predator that eats fish, frogs, birds, and mammals up to the size of deer. It is one of the few large predators in the world that regularly lives in close proximity to human settlements.
Muggers are opportunistic hunters that use the classic crocodilian ambush strategy — lying motionless at the water's edge, then exploding out with terrifying speed to seize prey that comes to drink. In Ranthambore National Park, tigers and muggers share waterholes in tense proximity — there are documented cases of both species successfully attacking the other. The name 'mugger' comes from the Urdu for 'water monster' and has entered the English language as the word for a street robber (one who pounces on victims).
